7 Tips to Stick with A Routine

Beth Colucci
As summer comes to a close, schedules tend to slow down and we are able to settle back into a routine, especially if you have children. With a slower schedule, it's time to focus on YOU and creating and sticking with a fitness routine. Here are 7 tips to help you stick with a routine and achieve success:

1. Make is Personal- Everyone has different goals when it comes to fitness. This fall, really dial into what your WHY is. Write it down, share it with friends and family, and really believe in it. Having a visual reminder of both your goals and WHY is incredibly helpful on those days where you just don't feel like doing it. Make a vision board and post it somewhere you will see it daily, make it the background on your phone, have a family member keep you accountable, etc. The Holidays will be here before you know it, so make sure you know WHY you are committing to a workout routine.

2.Do it For You-Thus goes hand in hand with "make it personal" above. Studies show that people who are externally motivated (ex: losing weight to look good at a big event) are less successful than those with an internal motivation (ex:losing weight to be a role model to children or lower blood pressure for heart health). You can have more than one WHY, but make sure you focus on the one that means most to you long-term; you're more likely to stay in it for the long run.

3.Be Selfish- Exercise has incredible benefits not just for the body, but for the mind as well. Women especially tend to put others before themselves, but it's imperative that you schedule workouts into your day. Exercise pumps additional blood to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients to power your mind. It also signals the release of hormones such as serotoin, which boots mood, dopamine, which affects learning and attention, perception and motivation. Just one 30-minute weight training session will make you more attentive, focused, and effective the rest of your day. Your boss, husband, wife, children , etc. will thank you.

4.Schedule it-In order to get the brain benefits I mentioned above, you must schedule your workouts. You know you must schedule a workout at Pure Physique to train, so don't let the excuses get in the way of you scheduling it. Your 30 minute session should outweigh getting your nails done, getting a blow out, sitting with friends for a drink, etc. They can wait. We all have busy lives, but if your health and fitness are a priority. You must find the time to make it here. If they are not, revisit your WHY from #1.

5.Get used to it- Once you get in the flow of things, especially with back-to-school-, your workouts should become a part of a routine, just like brushing your teeth at night. They say it takes 21 days for a routine, stick with it and you'll achieve higher success. It's like the quote says... "Tired of starting over? stop giving up."

6.Be Real- When it comes to goal setting it's really easy to throw out big goals. And as much as it would be awesome, no one can lose 30 pounds in two weeks. Goals should push you, but not push you over the edge. You want to be able to stick with a plan and therefore, have to be real about what you are able to do. Don't set a goal this Fall to get to the gym 6 days a week if your schedule really only allows for 3 days. Likewise when it comes to your fat loss goals. The more real you are with yourself, and US, the more likely you are to stick with your plan and achieve it.Let us help you set proper goals.

7.Track it- Keep a fitness journal or mobile app to track your progress. By now you are probably set up one MyFitnessPal or MyMacros to help track your calorie and macronutrient intakes. It's hard to see how far you've come unless you know where you started. Finally... Celebrate it!! Everybody's body is different so while your friend may lose 10 pounds in two weeks, you may lose three. But guess what? Three pounds is awesome!!

Set benchmarks or stepping stone goals for yourself and celebrate them.. not with beer and pizza, but maybe with a night out with friends or some new workout clothes. Your hard work and dedication deserves to be rewarded, so make sure you celebrate your successes no matter how small or large!
